Driving Light Legal: New South Wales Australia

Making Sure Your Auxiliary Spotlights or LED Light Bars are Legal Across Australia

You have to have perfect visibility for driving late at night. No matter which car you drive, your car should be equipped with a proper LED for clear vision.

The point is ever crucial if you are habitual in traveling in the countryside or rural areas.

Besides these, if you plan to get additional lights for your vehicle, you need to go through laws. There are laws that guide how many more lights your vehicle can have.

It is not possible to memorize each and every law, thus going through the official website is better. The same is true for Australia, as law varies from one country to the other.

We’re kicking it off with New South Wales:

Number of Lights

Unlike other states, the New South Wales Legislation states no rules as to the number of additional lights that can be fitted to your vehicle.

Instead, any lights that you can install to your vehicle must be done in pairs – therefore you must fit 2 lights at a time.

To quote the NSW Legislation website, “Additional pairs of headlights may be fitted to a motor vehicle with 4 or more wheels that were built after 1969.”

Fitting of Lights

When fitting additional lights (such as spotlights and LED lightbars), NSW rule states that additional headlights must be fitted in pairs and as far apart as possible.

This is a technical term for ensuring your additional lights are a matching pair and are symmetrical relevant to your vehicle.

For example, if you chose to run two sets of spotlights on your vehicles such as a pair of New Vision D7 and a second pair of New Vision D5,

you would mount the D7’s at each edge of your bull bar, with the D5’s mounted on the inside of each one. This makes the pairs “as far apart as possible, and in pairs”.

Operation of Lights

The operation of the additional lights also depends upon their operations. All should be mounted such that the working of the Light beam is with the main lights.

Mainly along with the high beam, the additional lights should either turn on or turn off.

The working of the additional LED beams should be in line with the high beam lights.

The NSW Government states that additional headlights fitted to a vehicle can only show a white light and must project its light ahead of your vehicle.

Type of Lights

The type of additional lights for your vehicle is also specified in NSW. As per rules, you can only have white lights as additional lights for your vehicle.

There are different and many lights with each vendor. The lights could vary accordingly. Some are light bars, LED driving lights, as well as some specific lamps.

The type of these lamps also varies on the basis of legal fitments and their application.

To get an insight into these different lights, you have to check the company’s website.

For installation purposes, you have to check the local laws in Australia. It is true that laws working in one state don’t apply in the other state.

Thus, you have to be pretty alert and prudent when planning in this regard.

The light beam and its refection should also be in line with the visibility of the driver and other cars. You need to address all aspects when getting additional beams for your cars.

The information provided by us is correct as of September 2021. As mentioned, it is worthwhile keeping up to date with local laws as they are subject to change.
