ECE Regulation 23
Worklights VS Reversing Lights
There exists the main difference between the work light and the reversing light.
The extra lights are mainly mounted in a car. This ensures better visibility and view when a car is being revered. The notion may sound logical, but in reality, it is not practical. This aspect is true in the eyes of rule of law for the lights.
For reversing light, shining lights are subject to rules and regulations. This pertains to the ECE R23 standards for reverse light. If the reverse light is authorized, it comes under the rules of R23.
If the output of the light is considered, the reverse lights are not very strong. The law tends to protect people from becoming blind owing to the brightness of lights. The same is logical as well.
Some companies come with lights that are as per regulations of R23 as well as absolute mavericks.
Guide to ECE Regulation 23
The ECE Regulations 23 applies to specially designed and reverse lamps. These facilities for the easy maneuvering of a car during day and night time.
Under the ECE regulations 23, the rules apply to:
- Brighten and illuminate the road so the rare car could see.
- Serves as a warning for a car when reversing or is about to reverse
The law is all about the car maneuvering lamp. It means an additional assisting light mounted on the sides of the car.
It tends to help the car in easy movement back and forth. The principle also helps the car during slow movements.
Every category of light has to be tested and approved. It means the light should be able to emit light in an appropriate manner.
Sometimes both pairs of lamps or even single light are able to emit proper light.
The color and direction should be sufficient for maximum visibility. It also ensures maximum visibility for other cars on the road as well.
The level of visibility and output of the car varies in the case of reverse lamps. It varies from 600cd to 8000cd.
The cd, i.e., candela has to be within the acceptable range of light/lamp.
The light should not go beyond the acceptable range of 300cd. This range is as per the angle and the plane of the light given.
The range of the maneuvering lights can be 500cd. This range is acceptable and as per the requirements of the user.
The placement of the lamp is not restricted to any specific angle and plane. This is true as per the visibility of the user in the light of angle and the plane.
In case of conformity to the ECE 23 regulations, the approval also has different ranges.
Specification for ECE Regulation for reverse lights
For reversing lamps, the intensity of the lights should be:
- Not less than the minimum capacity
- Not greater than the maximum capacity
- The measurement should be in the direction of the axis
- The overall intensity of the axis should not be more than 80 candelas
In the case of light emittance from different directions, the specifications have to:
- Over and above the horizontal plane for all directions, it has to be 300 candelas
- below 5 degrees, the candela has to be 8000 candelas
The measurement and the specifications of the reverse lamp on a car also vary. In the case of installation in the form of a pair, the intensity may also vary.
Similarly, for a single lamp with multiple lights, the rules and regulations have to be met.
Checking regulations for mounting LED lights
For mounting purposes, there is a requirement to check the regulations.
First, you need to have a specific set of lights in one area. The standard density of the light is 30 LED/meters. Whereas for higher density, it is around 60 LED/meters.
Mainly the unit for measuring the light intensity for LED light is LED per meter.
Also, the brightness of the light is measured in terms of the lumen.
Also for installation purposes, the specifications of lumen also vary:
- 175 to 360 lumen per foot is for lights under the cabinet
- 100 to 300 lumen per foot is for mood lightening
- 300 to 450 lumen per foot is for light distance
- 180 to 500 lumen per foot is for cover and bedroom lights
The color of the LED light is also dependent upon the choice of the user. You can have warm light, neutral light, and cool white light.
The reverse LED light ECE R 23
The specification of ECE 23 for 12V & 24V is as follow:
- The form of the light is square
– The pieces in the light has to be 9 - The length of the cable is around 1.5 meters
- The voltage is 10 to 50 volts
- The power rating is 15W
- IP68 is the protection class category.
