How Blue and Red Zone Forklift Lights Are Helpful For Forklift Safety

Each year, there are more than 95,000 forklift accidents. According to statistics, about 1 out of 10 forklifts will be involved in some type of accident.

70 percent of forklift accidents may be prevented by using forklift safety side lights. These lights make forklifts and pedestrians safer in your workplace.

Forklift blue spotlights alert pedestrians and other vehicles. They get alert that forklifts are approaching from blind corners, and crossing aisles. This is one of the brightest blue spotlights on the market.

The forklift is equipped with an intense blue LED proximity light that shines at pedestrians, as well as other forklifts, to alert them of oncoming traffic.

It can be a simple lack of attention that contributes to pedestrian safety in warehouses

People who aren’t paying attention are particularly at risk, such as those who walk near a forklift. A lot of people don’t pay attention because they are busy, worried about deadlines.

A smartphone or a conversation on the phone may occupy their attention. Although the reasons may vary, when forklifts are involved, the results can be fatal.

Most experts indeed agree that pedestrians and forklift drivers need to be trained, but that shouldn’t be the end of the story. Investing in various facilities and equipment upgrades will help improve training.

Forklift warning exclusion lights often called “blue lights,” project a disc of light ahead of the forklift as it moves.

These types of low-cost enhancements for forklifts are sensible and straightforward. As they are the most dangerous pieces of equipment in facilities that use them.

In part, blue lights work well because they provide a “disturbing” effect. It is not always possible to use tape or paint for traffic management or use static signs.

These safety measures don’t blend into the background as quickly as those warehouse employees see all day, every day.

We all know how many forklifts use these lights. So, it is crucial to understand how to mount them to ensure the most effectiveness.

Blue Spotlights

On the front or back of the lift trucks are blue spotlights that are used to warn pedestrians when a forklift is near and how fast it is approaching. In various locations on the forklift, the light projects an 8-foot-long bright blue beam forward or behind.

A Step by Step Guide to Install Forklift Safety Lights

Installation of the Model NV-F3

Plan the routing of all wires before you begin.

Here’s how to install the forklift warning lights:

1. Identify the mounting location of the light and the control switch provided by the installer.

2. Install the mounting bracket by drilling a 3/8-inch (9.525-mm) hole at the mounting location. The bracket should be secured to the vehicle with the provided lock washer and nut.

3. The power source should be connected to the control switch with an 18 AWG wire.

4. Fuse holder and user-supplied 5 A fuse should be installed near the power source.

5. Connect an 18 AWG wire to the LED module’s location from the switch

6. Wire the 18 AWG wires from the LED module location to the nearest convenient chassis ground. We recommend using the battery.

7. The LED module has the following wire functions: BLACK: Ground (-)

A RED or WHITE light indicates the internal flasher has power (+)

8. Verify that the light is working by checking the wiring.

WARNING: Beware of staring into the light from close range to prevent permanent damage to your eyes.

The lights need to be checked for distance once you have installed them. Moving or tampering with the light can affect the distance.

A pedestrian used to a certain “lead” distance would assume that forklifts always stay within that range.

So it is crucial to set the distance across all vehicles. It can lead to dangerous assumptions on pedestrians’ part when that distance changes.

FAQs

We get questions about forklift safety lights. Listed below are some asked questions and answers.

Q: What makes your blue light better than others?

  • Hardware made from stainless steel.
  • Integrated wire harness (custom AMP connectors not necessary)
  • Polycarbonate lens – safe for food-processing environments
  • IP67 rating – suitable for moist environments
  • Metal case (compared to plastic case models)
  • Robust construction weighing 2.3 pounds

Q: What voltages are offered?

Low-cost bulbs on the market run at 12-48V DC. Most forklifts operate between 48V and 80V. Voltage may overshoot under certain conditions, making an 80V forklift see voltage over 100V.

Q: How do you wire the Led into the forklift?

You can wire the lamp into a strobe circuit or a rear work light circuit. Whether you want the lamp always on or only in reverse depends on your preference.

We’ve heard from customers that they pigtail into existing reverse/tail lights on forklifts. The amp draws a VERY low 0.52 amp @ 12 volts. (It’s an LED light!)

Q: Does the light stay on only in reverse?

It depends on how you connect it to the forklift, the lamp should turn on whenever the key switch is pressed. It’s sure to attract attention if the forklift is going forward or backward. We recommend that a professional forklift mechanic install the LED.

Q: What other colours are available?

The blue and red colours are available.

Q: How bright is the beam of light?

An effective lumen rating of 33 lumens is available for the blue beam. White lights on white floors create a bright blue spot even in the brightest factories

Q: How far does the Led shine?

A bunch of different angles can be used to position the Led. On most forklifts, it can be found about 7-8 feet behind the forklift. The forklift’s mounting angle determines this distance.

Q: How do you mount the Led to the lift truck?

They are attached to the overhead guard. A lot of overhead guards on forklifts have light holes that you can use for the lighting.

Q: Is there a pulse setting so it can flash a bit?

No, it’ll project the beam onto the ground.
