How Do I Know If My LED Lights Are DOT Approved
NEW VISION AUTOMOTIVE PARTS. IS THE LEADER IN DOT COMPLIANT LIGHTING
What Are The Benefits of DOT Compliant Lighting?
What Does DOT-compliant Lighting Mean?
According to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), DOT-compliant lighting meets section 108 requirements. All auto lights, signaling, and reflecting devices are governed by these standards.
A set of FMVSS is established and administered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an agency of the department of transportation(DOT) and a government entity.
NOTE:
Even if your truck, bus, MPV, or trailer has all DOT-compliant lighting, you are still not compliant. For a vehicle to be DOT compliant, the lighting equipment must also meet specific requirements.

What Safety Tests Must Be Passed For A Light To Be Compliant
To meet SAE design standards, products must be designed and tested to meet performance and quality requirements. Here are some examples of the types of tests that products must pass to be considered performance- and quality-oriented.
Quality Testing:
- Photometry
- Vibration Testing
- Moisture Testing
- Dust Testing
- Corrosion Testing
- Plastic Optical Material Testing
- Heat Testing
What To Look For When Determining If A Light Is DOT Compliant?
On most lights, you will see an “SAE” code molded into or located on the plastic. As part of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, the Society of Automotive Engineers has developed standards for automotive lighting.
They have also developed a uniform identification code for use by all reputable car manufacturers. A lamp is coded with an SAE designation indicating that it has been designed to SAE specifications as indicated by the following letters.
- A = Reflex Reflector
- I =Turn Signal
- S = Stop Lamp
- T = Tail Lamp.
Other numbers indicate the lamp’s certification year

You need to ensure that the DOT-approved LED driving lights, LED fog light, or LED headlights you want to use on public highways and roads is not just SAE-approved,
since, in the end, it is DOT that determines what can be used on public roads and what cannot.
Our DOT-certified LED fog lights and headlights comply with SAE and E-Mark standards as well.
