First, are your vehicle’s headlights or running lights switched on? It may sound silly, but it happens to everyone. Some newer trucks also have a special “tow mode” that needs to be active for the trailer circuits to get power. Check your vehicle’s dashboard or settings to be sure.

Next, take a look at the connector socket on the back of your vehicle. Get a flashlight if you need one. So, where do you find it? Your vehicle’s owner’s manual is your best friend here. Most trucks and SUVs have at least two fuse boxes: one in the engine bay and one inside the cabin. The manual will have a diagram showing you which fuse powers the trailer light circuits.

What I can tell you is that most of the time, the light itself is terrific. The problem is almost always one of these three silent culprits. What is the number one, most common cause of trailer light failures?

It is a bad ground connection. I cannot stress this enough. Every light and every electrical circuit needs a clear path for electricity to return to the battery. This is called the ground. On a trailer, this is usually a white wire that is bolted directly to the metal frame.

If the spot where this wire connects to the frame becomes rusty, painted over, or loose, the electricity cannot complete its journey. This will cause your lights to act strangely.
