Why You Need a Wiring Harness Kits for offroad LED Light Bar
It is a switch. To know about wiring harnesses, you need to be aware of your vehicle’s wiring system. It is all about connection and the role of the light bar in the wiring system.
Do We Need a Wiring Harness Kit for LED Light Bar?
For the vehicle lighting bar, the absence of a wiring harness can be problematic. You might not consider it essential to purchase or install it in the beginning, but it can lead to future issues. You either need a proper wiring kit or a proper switch to avoid any mishap.
What Should You Do Before Install?
If you are habitual of driving late at night, then wiring a light bar will be a great help for your truck or SUV. It not only helps in the easy drive but also allows you to enjoy your late-night ride by brightening the road.
It is now easy to install LED light bars these days. It is due to their better contact sizes and easy installation requirements. There are, however, four main steps for installation:
1. Use A Relay Over A Simple Switch
With LED lower power capacity, it is preferred to use a relay with the help of a simple switch. Relays are better in taking more load when compared with switches.
Thus, there are no issues or fear of the relay getting heated or failing when in use. The voltage drop from the relay is also less. For better installation, the relay also allows for better control in the form of one switch. You will be able to turn on and off many lights using a single switch.
2. Choose A fuse
You need to take steps to avoid any unexpected damage to the vehicle’s electrical system. For that matter, it is better to keep a fuse between the battery and the relay.
It keeps the vehicle from suffering any damage to the electrical system, once the lights are on. Since the fuse becomes a scapegoat and sacrifices itself in case of any power outage.
This way the main wiring system of the vehicle is not damaged during a power surge. A perfect fuse has to have an accurate ampere rating. In case of any incorrect rating, the fuse would not trip when it needs to.
3. Make sure your Grounds are Good
You would be making LED light relay power connection with the battery. It means the battery’s negative terminal would not be used as ground. You need to have a clear connection between bare metals and the circuit.
It also helps when you ground the wiring pertaining to the vehicle chassis. With the help of a simple multimeter, it is better to test the ground. So in the future, it could be made permanent for better contact.
4. Decide on an Auxillary Switch or Factory
Another essential factor when wiring a LED bar is selecting the right switch. Wiring an aftermarket switch from within the vehicle can trigger the relay.
Better installation means targetting the headlight (high beams) of the vehicle. To achieve this, you may tap into the wire harness. It leads to the following:
- It saves the battery from draining out
- In case the light beam remains on, the darkness may not need you to have a light bar. In today’s vehicles, you will not leave your light beam on even accidentally. Especially when the ignition is on or lights are turned off.
If you follow the above-mentioned 4 steps, you will be safe from any uninvited troubles. Even if you go away from the light zone to dark areas during the drive, you won’t face any issues.
Off-Road LED Light Bars Installation Guide With A Wiring Harness Kit
There are total 6 steps that need to be taken for better LED Lightbar installation:
Step 1:
You need to be aware of the inner wiring system of the vehicle. The reference point needs to be determined for making strong connections.
Step 2:
Connect the terminal with the light bar. Tap the red wire to the white wire. Make black wire to the negative terminal. In case of making a connection, the wiring is kept with the electric tape.
Step 3:
The red wire in the system has to be connected with the fuse. You have to take the wire and then tap with the positive terminal of the battery. Take the black wire from the switch and tap with the negative terminal of the battery.
Step 4:
You have the liberty to keep the switch button anywhere at your convenience. It is due to the adhesive nature of the switch button.
When you keep the button on the vehicle inside, look for the firewall cover. The firewall cover is available on the driver’s side.
Make a connection of the switch wire with the inside of the vehicle. You need to take the switch wire from inside to the engine bay for that matter.
Step 5:
You have to make the connection between the light-positive wire with the red trigger.
For that matter, the black wire should be taped either with the ground or with a negative source.
It is essential to make the battery from draining unnecessarily. Especially during situations when it remains unused for a long duration.
Step 6:
You need to check the new wire switch. It ensures if the light functions as you want it to function. In case of any issue with the wiring, experts can help in sorting out the issue.
I’m installing a light bar to my 2017 F350 Platinum with uplifter switches. The uplifter switches (located inside the truck) have multiple relays built directly into the engine compartment where wires run from the relay boxes to whatever you want to connect. Would i need a fuse, relay, etc. from the light bar manufacturer or just run the light bar wire directly to my trucks relay wire?
Hey Dwight
You should buy a wiring harness for the lightbar to connect, similar to like this
